The Curious Incident of the Bread Baby

Well, I made a fool of myself at the grocery store yesterday. However, in my defense I believe I was doing a good thing, it just came out really, really stupid. Here's what happened:

I was standing in line waiting for my cold cuts (I was number 66 and they were on 54 yet only about 4 people were standing there. I am not sure how this always happens, do people just give up? "Man, I came here for some 1/2 a pound Low-Sodium Ham but a 30 second wait??? What kind of sucker do you think I am?) So, I am standing there waiting to place my order when a woman starts walking up to her cart right next to me. This woman is carrying what I believe is a baby. I determine this based on the way she was carrying her baby . . . like a baby. As she is walking over with her small child cradled up against her she swiftly moves and just DROPS the baby into her cart! In shock I jump and yell out "Oh my God!" This woman just dropped her baby from up against her shoulder all the way down into her metal shopping cart!! Only, it wasn't a baby at all but a loaf of bread. She looked at me, as did a few other folks waiting on their meats and cheeses, to which I just said "Uh, um, sorry, I . . ." and then I skipped my deli order and quickly pushed my card away.

That reminds me of the time I was buying a loaf of bread but accidentally bought a small Tawainese boy instead. You can imagine my suprise as I went to make some toast and found little Ling instead. We had a good laugh, but alas I had to bring him back to the store. Oh well, I got my whole wheat bread in the end! Phew! that was a close one!
