Alcohol in the Self Checkout Line?

I try, whenever possible, to use the self checkout line at the grocery store. I do this because I find that most of the time it is the shortest line, that is until someone slows it down because they don't know what they are doing, and yesterday, that person may have been me.

So, I'm scanning and bagging away, when I get to my bottle of wine. I scan it and the light over the machine starts blinking. The woman behind me lets out a hufff and I stand there, unable to continue until someone comes over and checks my ID.

I was prepared with license in hand, because when you look like an 8 year-old prepubescent boy you are quite familiar with the carding process. However, I see the guy starting to come over and he gets held up at another register. Basically, it takes way longer to finish this transaction than I had initially expected. All of a sudden, I'm the crazy coupon lady with her organized manila folder of 5 cent discount cutouts holding up the line. The women behind me says, "You know, you shouldn't be bringing alcohol in the self checkout."

Now, I know you are ALLOWED to bring alcohol into the self checkout out, but SHOULD you?

Personally, I'm more confused about what grocery store sells alcohol too in this area. I have yet to see that in New Jersey...

It's a double edged sword. It shouldn't be an issue if you only have a few things and there's not a huge line piling up behind you. But if it's a super busy time and its obvious that help is not going to be quick on its way, you should probably stick to the regular lanes. Though, I agree that the self checkout lane is always faster and easier as long as you're not technologically challenged.

Gina - Wegmans does sell alcohol - they may be one of the only ones in NJ.

Screw that, it's the grocery's store's job to have a cashier standing there. You should have passed gas as you walked out, leaving the scent linger for that woman.
